Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
An entire town, Greek and then Roman, set against the mouth of a gorge in the Alpilles. Silt had buried it; digging began in 1921. You walk down paved streets, past the baths, the forum, the House of Antae and the twin temples, three of whose columns still stand. It is the most complete ancient site in Provence, and one of the quietest.

Across the road, the triumphal arch and the mausoleum — “les Antiques” — can be seen freely, no ticket needed. And the monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, where Van Gogh spent a year, is two hundred metres away.
Admission
Allow a good hour and a half, more with the audioguide. The site is in full sun and the streets are cobbled: hat, water, closed shoes. Municipal car park opposite, €4 for eight hours.
